About

diet buddySince you’re at this page you must be wondering who is behind DietBuddy.info.

My name’s Lois, and I have struggled with my weight since adolescence.  Weight loss has long been a concern for me, both because keeping my weight in check is a constant battle, and also because of my interest in the way the body works (which led me into 2 medically-oriented careers, medical lab technologist, and medical transcriptionist).

Now a little history of my weight loss journey…

My mom (“Mum” as we Canadians say) was one of those moms who gave love in bowls of creamy potatoes and boats of gravy, fresh bread on a weekly basis, and homemade delectable cookies which galloped out of her kitchen on a continual basis.  (As you can tell, I was a perfect recipient for that kind of lovin’ – I LOVE FOOD!)

As a child, I was active enough to burn off most of her loving (lol), and was just a tad meaty.  As I entered adolescence though, that time in my life also coincided with lots of fast food hitting the market, hormones, the TV was stoked with tons to watch, and I was an inactive student who studied… and ate.  Mom, of course, kept cooking too!

So began my years of dieting, and my continual search of the next, new, great DIET.

I’ve been on every diet out there, I think. Weight Watchers, The Zone, South Beach, Nutrasystem, Atkins, and I’ve made the diet book industry a whole heap of money too!  The good part of this is that I have a pretty good idea of what’s out there, what works, and what diet is just plain crap!

My weight has yo-yo’d through the years, up to an all time high after the birth of my first child, when I hit the scales at 230 lbs.  Yikes.  Admittedly, some people can look pretty nice at a heavy weight.  Not ME.  I looked puffy and huge and lumpy – a definite genetic disadvantage (or advantage, depending on how you look at it!).

I was able to really effectively take weight off after hitting that high with a form of low carbing.  My diet consisted mostly of vegetables, and good quality, lower fat protein sources.  It’s the way I eat to this day (after 18 years of it) because it works best for my body type.

One thing that I learned, which took literally YEARS to dawn on me, is that just about every diet works. Some are better for you than others, mind you, but diets do work.  The problem I had with most of the ones I tried was that I thought I could do a diet, lose the weight, and then continue on as before.

This I do know – THAT DOES NOT WORK! If you are prone to being overweight, you have to be real with yourself, and realize that you will always have to be careful with your eating. Eating with abandon always has gotten me into trouble with the scale.

I also believed that if I only found the Magical Wonder Diet I would lose weight and be forever thin…easily… no effort… magical!

Wrongo. I thought that I could eat the right foods and lose, without giving a thought to the amount of food I was eating.  And let me tell you – I can eat more than a threshing team!  (For you with parents from the city, that’s A LOT OF GRUB, baby!)  You can probably guess that I had a heap load of failure with them.

Anyway, DietBuddy.info is made with you in mind. I know what it’s like to feel bad about myself in a society where it seems the only thing that matters is the number on the scale.  I know how friggin’ frustrating it is to fail at weight loss time and time again, and struggle with the issues that surround being overweight.

DietBuddy is here to give you help, tips, support and motivation.  If nothing else, I hope you come away with the knowledge that someone cares about you and what you’re going through.

To your weight loss success,

Lois
